Leisure: The Basis of Culture Josef Pieper

In his classic Leisure as the Basis of Culture (1952), Pieper articulates a vision of the Catholic work ethic. Two opposite errors, in fact, seem to have taken root in contemporary culture: laziness and busyness. I would strongly urge a reading of Josef Pieper “Leisure, The Basis of Culture” There he argues that we are losing our ability to do true philosophical work that is more contemplative, or receptive, in nature. In his book, “Leisure: The Basis of Culture,” the Catholic philosopher Josef Pieper called leisure a “condition of the soul.” It's not the same thing as inactivity or quiet.
